Bolton is a large town with a population of about 261,000 situated in the north west of England, in the Greater Manchester area.
Bolton is distinguished for its Victorian Architecture, countryside, historic manor houses, excellent shopping and a customary Lancashire welcome. A town centre with indoor shopping malls, a Victorian Market Hall and a well-known traditional outdoor market.
In its heyday as an industrial town the skyline was a forest of chimneys, most of which served the textile industry, for which Bolton was a world-renowned centre.
It was always a town that made things. In a famous study carried out by Mass Observation between 1937 and 1940 it was known as Worktown.
The elephant on the Crest and on many other buildings in the town may refer to the town's early religious links with Coventry. Others say that it symbolises the cotton trade's links with the Far East.
Bolton's Coat of Arms shows a shield with an arrow (or a bolt) through a crown. A "bolt" is a mediaeval word for an arrow and the crown represents the wooden stockade around a Saxon village called a "tun" -thus "bolt-tun."
